The Mayan ruins located about 30 miles north of Belize City are called Altun Ha. The site dates back to approximately 900 BCE. As the Mayan city grew, humans pushed back the tropical rainforest, then when the city died out, the rainforest reclaimed the land once again. In the 1960s, the site was re-discovered and once again humans changed the landscape and pushed back the rainforest.
